Glass Tutorials Hello To All The Murrini Addicts!!!
Here are the instructions on how to use the Thin Chip PapaGallo Feather Murrini on Feng Frit Factory. I have found that this tiny chip gives amazing detail and only requires a little extra heat control to make it work!!! Enjoy!!!
Step 1. Make the base bead and get it to the final shape and stage before applying the murrini. While keeping the bead warm but not hot (you don’t want to distort but you don’t want a thermal crack either) take a pair of locking tweezers and pick up the murrini in the middle of the chip leaving a little bit of the glass outside the tip of the tweezer this will eliminate a tweezer mark when you adhere the chip.
Step 2. Spot heat the area in which you would like place the chip- Now here is the tricky part, at the same time pre heat your chip in the back of the flame by waving it quickly it does not take much so be careful not to get it too hot or it will stick to the tweezers you are only trying to prevent shock when you apply it to the hot bead. (if you have a hot plate just skip this and pick up a warm chip from the plate)
Step 3. Once your chip is applied you can begin to heat and press the chip till it is the way you would like your feather to be BEFORE raking. I do this by gently heating the chip pressing down with a flat tool or marver and then heating again and pressing repeating this as many times as necessary to achieve the right look. It is not necessary to melt in completely in fact leaving it raised lends to better detail. I then take a cold thin stringer and snip the end off you want a nice sharp point you can do this by letting it ball up in the flame and then dunking it in a water dish the molten glass will pop right off and you will be left with a sharp edge.
Step 4. You are ready to rake!!!! I heat up the chip enough so the glass will move when I rake downward with the stringer. Once heated, I hold the bead out of the flame I start at the top and take the stringer to the hot chip raking about 3-5mm past the chip this will create a “Quill” at the bottom of the feather. This step happens quick so if the chip cools too much to rake just start over it won’t hurt the final look.
Step 5. You can now add more layers of Feathers like the example bead in the listing or leave it as is. I also embellish this by adding a white dot at the top of the finished feather. I hope these instructions help you use this wonderful little chip- I have now found that it is true what they say “good things really do come in small packages”!!!!!!
Warm Wishes,
Michelle
